    The F2803x Piccolo™ family of microcontrollers provides the power of the C28x™ core and Control Law Accelerator (CLA) coupled with highly integrated control peripherals in low pin-count devices. This family is code-compatible with previous C28x-based code, as well as providing a high level of analog integration.

    An internal voltage regulator allows for single rail operation. Enhancements have been made to the HRPWM module to allow for dual-edge control (frequency modulation). Analog comparators with internal 10-bit references have been added and can be routed directly to control the PWM outputs. The ADC converts from 0 to 3.3-V fixed full scale range and supports ratio-metric VREFHI/VREFLO references. The ADC interface has been optimized for low overhead/latency.

    The Piccolo F28035 based solar explorer kit is intended to give designers the opportunity to evaluate different power stages used in solar applications in a safe, low voltage environment. This kit also offers designers of single panel off-grid applications such as lighting or motor control systems a robust development platform to start from by utilizing the 36VDC intermediate bus. All of the primary application power stages are controlled with a single C2000 MCU, including a single switch boost stage for maximum power point tracking, a SEPIC battery charging stage, and a grid-tie-capable DC/AC inverter stage capable of outputting 24VAC. Integrated USB JTAG emulation eliminates the need for external JTAG development hardware. A built in panel emulation circuit also allows designers to evaluate different shading situations without the need for expensive external hardware. A quickstart graphical user interface is included, as well as fully documented, open source hardware and software libraries.

    Two new Piccolo-based solar developer kits from Texas Instruments bring advanced peripherals, application targeted development hardware, a comprehensive library of algorithms, and an industry leading development environment to the renewable energy market. These two kits enable designers to jump-start designs while evaluating different algorithms and topologies.

    Both development kits are built on the Texas Instruments C2000™ F28035 Piccolo MCU device. Running at speeds up to 60Mhz, the F28035 features up to 128KB of flash memory, a 12-bit 4.6MSPS multichannel ADC, ePWM outputs, and the control law accelerator (CLA). The CLA is an integrated floating-point coprocessor designed to run control algorithms without any processor interaction. The high voltage solar developers kit features the Concerto™ MCU to the inverter portion of the design offering the flexibility of having control code and communications code handled by a single processor.As part of the C2000 family of MCU devices, these boards are fully supported in the controlSUITE™ IDE. Within control- SUITE, designers can quickly find all of the necessary tools for the Solar Developer boards including both general purpose algorithm libraries as well as renewable energy specific functions.

    The high voltage isolated kit features a 300VDC compatible input stage supporting up to 500W. This dual controller design features a two switch interleaved boost stage for MPPT and an isolated LLC resonant DC/DC converter. A full bridge inverter stage with PLL AC line synchronization completes the secondary side of the board and features enhanced communications by utilizing the Concerto MCU to drive the control stage while also providing ethernet support to the board.

    The low voltage kit is designed for safe benchtop level experimentation. Supporting a 12VDC/50W input stage, this board also features built in PV emulation, a photo-diode for light sensing, a single switch DC/DC boost for MPPT, a DC/DC SEPIC stage for battery charging, and a full bridge AC/DC inverter stage capable of driving 24VAC.

    F28035 Piccolo controlCARD

    The C2000 controlCARDs from Texas Instruments are ideal products for OEMs to use for initial software development and short run builds for system prototypes, test stands, and many other projects that require easy access to high-performance controllers. The controlCARDs are complete board-level modules that utilize an industry-standard DIMM form factor to provide a low-profile single-board controller solution. All of the C2000 controlCARDs use the same 100-pin connector footprint to provide the analog and digital I/Os on-board controller and are completely interchangeable. Each controlCARD provides an isolated RS-232 interface for communications. The host system needs to provide only a single 5V power rail to the controlCARD for it to be fully functional. ControlCARDs from TI support the 60 Mhz TMX320F28027 and F28035 (Piccolo), the 100MHz TMS320F2808 (P/N TMDSCNCD2808) and the 150MHz floating-point TMS320F28335 (P/N TMDSCNCD28335). Standalone JTAG emulator required. Sold separately.

    The Piccolo F2803x controlCARD can be used as a quick evaluation board as well as a noise-resistant plug-in card in low-quantity production.
